Lukas Szrot completed his Ph.D. in sociology in the spring of 2019 at the University of Kansas. He is currently an assistant professor of sociology at Bemidji State University.

Further professional/scholarly details available on the scholarship page.

I’d like to be a bit more informal on this page, and talk about some other interests I have, some of the things that led me here—and a few lessons learned along the way.

I’m also holding back a bit here, as writing and scholarship are my priorities currently.

I enjoy the outdoors, books, coffee, craft beer, food, music (particularly rock, heavy metal, and classical), science fiction, and strength training. I have been happily married since 2013.

This is a 2019 picture of me with my dog, Chewie, hiking in a bog on the north side of Lake Bemidji. Chewie passed away on January 25, 2023 after a long and adventure-filled life, but I carry his memory with me every time I go outside.

Blog

I love to write. It is what motivated me to pursue a PhD. When not working on books, chapters, and articles, I maintain a quarterly (formerly monthly) blog, and occasionally add special entries when the mood strikes.

Topics: scholarship, writing, nature, culture, theory/big thoughts, music, growing older

Outdoors

I try to spend at least an hour of each day outside, away from my devices and the demands of life in this efficiency-obsssessed technological society. Sometimes the adventure is in the backyard, and sometimes it’s the park down the street. Often, my family and I find adventures beyond that. I try to capture the highlights on camera from time to time, and have begun building a gallery of images from these adventures over the years (which isn’t open yet but will be soon).

Beer Tourism

In addition to spending time outdoors, I enjoy sampling craft beers from all over the world. And if I can be outdoors and having a beer, even better. I’m compiling a list of the breweries I’ve visited over the years. When this page goes live, access will be restricted to those of legal drinking age.

And I’m thinking I want to be tenured before I get going on this gallery, too haha

Music

I used to be a musician. Well, I used to be a serious musician. It was a financial and emotional disaster, but it was often fun, and I made a lot of friends along the way.

I have continued to compose, play, and share music, time-permitting.

Here’s a picture of me playing digital piano in a parking lot in Arlington, TX in 2013 lol.
